Explanation
The concept of Social Bonds comes from Travis Hirschi’s Social Control Theory (1969). According to Hirschi, individuals refrain from deviance because of their connections to society. These bonds consist of four elements:
-
Attachment to others (e.g., parents, teachers)
-
Commitment to conventional goals (e.g., career, education)
-
Involvement in conventional activities
-
Belief in societal norms and laws
The stronger these bonds, the less likely a person is to commit crime. Conversely, weak or broken bonds may increase the risk of delinquency.
