Rehabilitation

The process of reintegrating offenders into society and preventing further criminal behavior through education, treatment, and support.

Explanation

Rehabilitation aims to address the underlying causes of crime, such as addiction, lack of education, or unemployment. In contrast to punitive approaches, it focuses on reducing recidivism and supporting offenders in leading a law-abiding life. Rehabilitation measures can include therapy, vocational training, educational programs, and restorative justice initiatives.

Theoretical Reference

Rehabilitation is a core principle of modern penal theory and is often contrasted with deterrence and retribution. The “nothing works” debate of the 1970s challenged its effectiveness, but later research has emphasized the value of tailored programs.
