Prison Sentence

A form of punishment in which an offender is deprived of liberty for a specific period of time.

Explanation

The prison sentence is one of the most severe sanctions in modern criminal law. It involves confinement in a correctional institution and is intended to punish, deter, and rehabilitate offenders. However, research shows that short-term prison sentences often have negative effects, such as disrupting social bonds and increasing recidivism. Long-term imprisonment, on the other hand, raises ethical and human rights concerns.

Theoretical Reference

Prison sentences are central to the sociology of punishment. Michel Foucault analyzed imprisonment as part of the disciplinary society, while abolitionist perspectives question the legitimacy of incarceration as a response to crime.
