Police

A state institution responsible for maintaining public order, enforcing laws, and preventing crime.

Explanation

The police are central actors in systems of social control. Their tasks include investigation, prevention, and ensuring security. However, the police are also criticized for discriminatory practices such as racial profiling, excessive use of force, or politicization of their authority. Criminological research emphasizes that policing is not purely neutral but shaped by social, cultural, and political contexts.

Theoretical Reference

The police are analyzed within policing studies, critical criminology, and sociology of law. Theories of power (Weber, Foucault) highlight their role as instruments of state authority.
