Explanation
The concept of the Code of the Street was developed by sociologist Elijah Anderson. It describes a street-oriented value system that emerges in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods characterized by poverty, weak institutional trust, and limited social opportunities.
Within this context, respect becomes a central social resource. Individuals may use toughness, aggression, or violence to defend reputation and avoid victimization.
The “street code” therefore regulates:
- conflict resolution,
- masculinity,
- status,
- and responses to disrespect.
The concept has been highly influential in research on youth violence, gangs, urban inequality, and street culture.
