Code of the Street

Code of the Street refers to informal rules governing respect, violence, and social interaction in disadvantaged urban neighborhoods.

Explanation

The concept of the Code of the Street was developed by sociologist Elijah Anderson. It describes a street-oriented value system that emerges in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods characterized by poverty, weak institutional trust, and limited social opportunities.

Within this context, respect becomes a central social resource. Individuals may use toughness, aggression, or violence to defend reputation and avoid victimization.

The “street code” therefore regulates:

  • conflict resolution,
  • masculinity,
  • status,
  • and responses to disrespect.

The concept has been highly influential in research on youth violence, gangs, urban inequality, and street culture.

Theoretical Reference

Code of the Street combines elements of cultural criminology, social disorganization theory, and symbolic interactionism.
