State Power

The authority and capacity of a government to regulate society.

Explanation

State power refers to the formal and informal means through which governments exercise control over populations. It includes laws, policing, surveillance, taxation, welfare, and military force. In criminology, state power is analyzed as both a guarantor of order and a potential source of oppression, often shaping definitions of crime, punishment, and social control in ways that maintain existing power structures.
