Singularization describes social processes through which individuals, lifestyles, products, places, and experiences increasingly become valued for their uniqueness and distinctiveness rather than for conformity to standardized norms.
The concept was developed particularly by German sociologist Andreas Reckwitz, who argues that late modern societies increasingly reward individuality, authenticity, creativity, and emotional self-expression.
Singularization can be observed in:
- identity construction,
- consumer culture,
- social media self-presentation,
- creative work and lifestyle branding,
- urban culture and gentrification,
- and educational and career competition.
According to Reckwitz, contemporary societies increasingly organize status and recognition around symbolic uniqueness rather than purely economic class positions.
At the same time, singularization may intensify social pressure, insecurity, competition, and experiences of exclusion for individuals unable to achieve socially valued forms of distinction.
