Queer Criminology

A perspective that explores the intersection of sexuality, gender identity, and the criminal justice system.

Explanation

Queer criminology challenges heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions in mainstream criminology. It analyzes how LGBTQ+ individuals experience criminalization, policing, victimization, and incarceration differently from heterosexual and cisgender individuals. The field critiques structural discrimination and seeks to amplify queer voices in legal, penal, and criminological discourse.

Theoretical Reference

Rooted in feminist criminology, critical theory, and queer theory, queer criminology draws on the works of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and contemporary LGBTQ+ scholars to highlight issues of power, normativity, and identity.
