Manosphere

The manosphere refers to a loosely connected network of online communities focused on masculinity, gender relations, anti-feminism, and male identity.

Explanation

The manosphere is a broad online ecosystem consisting of websites, forums, influencers, podcasts, and social media communities centered around masculinity, gender politics, dating strategies, and critiques of feminism.

The manosphere includes a wide range of groups and subcultures, including:

  • Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs),
  • Pickup Artists (PUAs),
  • Red Pill communities,
  • Incel communities,
  • and self-improvement or “alpha male” influencers.

While some manosphere communities focus on self-help, fitness, or discussions of male mental health, others promote misogynistic, anti-feminist, or highly polarized views of gender relations.

Researchers have examined the manosphere as a form of digital subculture shaped by:

  • online identity formation,
  • algorithm-driven media environments,
  • changing gender norms,
  • economic insecurity,
  • and crises of masculinity in late modern societies.

Parts of the manosphere have also attracted attention in research on online extremism and radicalization due to overlaps with misogynistic discourse, conspiracy thinking, and political polarization.

Theoretical Reference

The manosphere is associated with masculinity studies, digital sociology, subcultural theory, online radicalization research, media studies, and cultural criminology.
