Antifa

A loosely organized movement opposing fascism, racism, and far-right extremism, often through direct action.

Explanation

“Antifa” (short for anti-fascist) refers to a broad, decentralized network of activists and groups who oppose fascist ideologies and far-right movements. With historical roots in anti-Nazi resistance in 1930s Europe, contemporary Antifa movements challenge racism, white supremacy, and authoritarianism. Tactics vary and may include protest, education, monitoring extremist groups, and, controversially, physical confrontation or property damage. Antifa is often mischaracterized as a centralized organization, but it functions as a fluid, grassroots resistance movement.

Theoretical Reference

In the context of Critical Criminology, Antifa raises questions about the boundaries of legitimate resistance, political violence, state repression, and the criminalization of dissent.
