Additional Information

Max Horkheimer was a central figure of the Frankfurt School and one of the founding theorists of Critical Theory. As director of the Institute for Social Research, he played a pivotal role in integrating Marxist theory with psychoanalysis, sociology, and philosophy, aiming to develop a multidimensional critique of modern capitalist societies.

Together with Theodor W. Adorno, Horkheimer co-authored Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944), a seminal work that analyzed how Enlightenment rationality, instead of liberating humanity, had become instrumental in domination and social control. His philosophical contributions addressed the interplay between reason, authority, and freedom, while emphasizing the role of ideology in sustaining social injustice. Horkheimer’s work laid the foundation for later critiques of instrumental reason, culture industry, and the authoritarian personality.
