Representativeness

Representativeness refers to the extent to which a sample accurately reflects the characteristics of a larger population.

Explanation

Representativeness describes how accurately a research sample reflects the characteristics, structures, and diversity of a larger population. A representative sample allows researchers to generalize findings from the sample to the broader population.

Representativeness is particularly important in quantitative research, surveys, and statistical analysis. Researchers aim to minimize sampling bias and ensure that relevant social groups are adequately included in the sample.

Problems with representativeness may occur when certain populations are excluded, underrepresented, or more likely to participate than others. This can distort research findings and reduce the validity of conclusions.

Theoretical Reference

Representativeness is a central concept in quantitative sociology, survey research, and statistical methodology. Positivist research traditions emphasize representative sampling in order to produce generalizable findings about social reality.
